Community Smart Export Guarantee (CSEG)
With our CSEG tariff, you'll earn a flat rate of 3p/kWh for every unit of power your community-owned project exports.
Got a solar, wind or hydro site with a capacity of 150kWp or less, and will be earning less than a cost of an annual MOP contract from export? You can sign up now.

Export PPA vs CSEG
At Younity, we mainly pay community energy groups for the power they generate through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). To get paid for your exported energy through a PPA, you’ll need a Half-Hourly meter and a Meter Operator (MOP) contract – which usually costs between £150 and £600 a year per system.
If your site doesn’t export much and wouldn’t earn enough to cover the cost of a MOP contract, the CSEG rate could be a better fit – you won’t need a MOP contract and you’ll still get paid for what you export. For more information, please see the FAQs at the bottom of this page.
Interested in our Community Smart Export Guarantee (CSEG)? You might be eligible if:
-
You're a community energy group
-
Your site has a smart meter or AMR (Automated Meter Reading) meter
-
The site is under 150kWp in capacity
-
No export PPA already in place for that supply with Younity or another supplier
-
The site is FiT-registered (you can receive CSEG alongside FiT)
That sounds perfect for my renewable project. What’s the sign-up process?
Application Process (1 week) – Once you apply, Octopus Energy gets things moving and requests an export MPAN from the DNO (if you don't have one). An MPAN is the unique number linked to your electricity meter. If you're setting up export for the first time, a new one has to be requested from your Distribution Network Operator. You can read more about the DNO here.
If you don’t have an export MPAN already:
-
DNO creates your MPAN (4–10 weeks) – This is the longest step in the process. The DNO sets up your export MPAN, which can take anywhere from one to four weeks depending on how busy they are (a bit like waiting for a passport). Once that’s done, we can start getting you set up with Octopus Energy.
-
Your MPAN is enrolled (5 days) – Your new export MPAN gets added to your account, and you’ll get an email asking for your first meter reading.
If you have an MPAN already, skip here:
You send us your meter reading – Just send over your first reading along with a photo of your meter to confirm it’s correct. We’ll then check your account to make sure everything’s set up and payments are good to go.
FAQs
1. How can I sign my site up to receive the CSEG?
Complete this form to begin the process. We'll get in touch with next steps.
2. Who is eligible for the Community SEG?
You may be eligible if:
-
You're a community energy group
-
Your site has a smart meter or AMR (Automated Meter Reading) meter
-
Your site is under 150kWp per MPAN
-
You do not already have an export PPA in place with us or another supplier
3. What is the capacity limit?
Up to 150kWp per MPAN.
4. How much will I get paid for my exported energy?
We offer a flat rate of 3p/kWh.
5. How long is the contract?
The contract is open-ended – stay on it as long as you like. You can leave at any time with no penalties; just let your Younity account manager know, or email us at together@younity.coop.
6. How long will the whole process take?
-
If your site already has an export MPAN, the setup can take as little as 1 week.
-
If you need a new export MPAN, it may take up to 12 weeks.
Please note: if your import meter needs reconfiguring for export, this could add additional time.
7. What kind of meter can I register?
You can register a smart meter (with export capability) or a meter with an AMR device, whether it’s Non-Half Hourly (NHH) or Half-Hourly (HH). The meter must be used for both import and export – you cannot register a separate generation meter.
8. What if the import meter isn’t reconfigured for export?
We will appoint the same Meter Operator (MOP) as your import meter so it can be reconfigured remotely. If the export MOP appointment is rejected, you may need to provide your import MOP contract reference to enable the change.
9. How do you receive export data?
-
If Octopus Energy supply the import meter AND it’s smart or HH, export data is received automatically.
-
If another supplier provides the import supply or the meter is AMR, you’ll need to log the meter readings monthly on the Octopus portal (details will be sent to you once you sign up).
10. Can I receive CSEG if I'm already receiving Feed in Tariff (FiT) payments?
Yes – you can receive the CSEG alongside FiT generation payments, but not FiT export payments. You must opt out of FiT export to receive the CSEG.
11. Can I switch to a different SEG or PPA later?
Yes – you're free to leave the CSEG at any time and enter a different SEG tariff or Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), with no exit fees.
