MaidEnergy is a Community Benefit Society created to tackle the climate crisis by growing locally generated, locally owned renewable energy. Established in 2010 by a small group "passionate about renewable energy", it works to identify local buildings ready to cut both carbon and costs.
What started with a handful of passionate volunteers and a single solar array at an arts centre has grown into a 641kWp portfolio across Berkshire and Surrey, all owned by MaidEnergy's 250-plus members.
About the project
Seven sites, one shared mission
Since launching its first community share offer in 2015, MaidEnergy has funded seven solar PV installations and one ground source heat pump, backed by more than £900,000 of member investment. The portfolio includes:

Norden Farm Arts Centre, a Georgian farmhouse and 18th-century long barn, and MaidEnergy's very first project back in 2015

Furze Platt Senior School, a 224.3kWp array installed in 2023, funded by a £248,000 share offer

Braywick Leisure Centre, 292 panels generating 108kW, installed in 2020 and integrated with the centre's combined heat and power system

Thames Valley Athletics Centre, Windsor — a 78kW array
Together, these installations have saved over 780 tonnes of carbon dioxide to date — including 241 tonnes in 2024 alone.
Built to last, built by the community
Every MaidEnergy project carries an "asset lock", protecting the renewable energy infrastructure for the benefit of the community for the long term. It's a democratically run co-op, meaning the 250-plus members who've backed it with their investment also have a say in how it's run — and every host site benefits twice over, from cheaper, greener power and from having those savings freed up to spend where it matters most.
From a single farmhouse roof to a school, a leisure centre and an athletics track, MaidEnergy shows what steady, community-led growth looks like...one share offer, and one roof, at a time.
