What is a Community Power Club?

A Club connects households and businesses with community-owned renewable energy projects.

When you join a Club, your electricity usage can be matched with generation from local solar, wind or hydro projects. When that matching happens, an additional financial value is created that can be shared between Club members and the community energy organisation that owns the renewable energy project.

For Club members, it means savings on their energy bills, and for generators, a boost to keep up their amazing work across the local area.

It allows local people and organisations to own, support and benefit from renewable energy projects — generating clean power while creating benefits that stay within the communities where they operate.

Why join a Community Power Club?

1

Receive electricity bill savings when your consumption aligns with generation from projects in your Club.

2

Help people-powered renewable energy projects generate more value for the communities they serve.

3

Support organisations that reinvest profits into local initiatives and future renewable energy projects.

4

Join a growing movement helping communities play a bigger role in creating a cleaner energy future.

Who can join?

Each Club sets its own membership criteria. Some are open to everyone, while others may prioritise local residents or businesses — the map above shows what's available in your area.

To join a Club, you must be on EnergyCoop's Community Power Tariff, the only tariff powered entirely by community-generated electricity.

We know this tariff won't suit every household — for example, those with solar panels or EVs — so we'll also support a number of Octopus Smart Tariffs.

Common questions

Community Power Club FAQs

What is a Community Power Club?

A Community Power Club is a new way for households and businesses to use the power from community-owned renewable energy projects. When you join a club, your electricity usage can be matched with generation from the project(s) in your Club, such as solar, wind or hydro. The more electricity Club members use when the project is generating, the more value that could be created for the community energy organisation and members.

Who runs the Community Power Club?

The Club you choose to join is linked to one or more community energy organisations that own renewable energy projects. The community energy organisation(s) run their club, with operational support from Younity, Octopus Energy and EnergyCoop.

Why should I join a Community Power Club?

By joining a Community Power Club, you could: be supplied by a community-owned renewable energy project; benefit from credit on your electricity bill when you consume at the same time as the projects in your club generate; support community-owned renewable energy; help more value stay within the local community; support projects that tackle climate change; help the community energy organisation earn more from its power; and be part of a local, clean energy community.

Domestic Households FAQs

Is the electricity coming directly into my home from a community energy project?

Not physically — your electricity still comes through the national grid. The Club works by matching your household electricity use with the project's generation in each half-hour period. When a portion, or all, of your electricity consumption is matched, it is supplied by the community energy project(s) in your Club.

Do I need to live near the community energy project(s)?

Not necessarily. Community Power Clubs do not have to be limited by geography. However, some community energy groups may choose to focus on people in a particular town, borough, village or local area.

Do I need to switch my energy supplier?

To join any Community Power Club as a domestic (household) customer, you will need to be on one of several tariffs: EnergyCoop's Community Power Tariff — currently the UK's only tariff powered with 100% community-owned renewable energy — or one of Octopus Energy's smart energy tariffs. If you're not already on one of these tariffs, you will need to switch.

Business Customer FAQs

Do I need a smart meter?

Yes. Business customers need a smart meter so that your electricity use can be measured half-hourly. If you don't have one already, you should get one installed before joining a Community Power Club. You can request a smart meter appointment via your online Octopus Energy account, by emailing hello@octopus.energy or calling 0808 164 1088.

Can I leave a Club after joining?

Yes, you can leave a Club at any time — either to switch to a different club (if you're eligible) or leave a Club completely. For more information, you can see Paragraph 4 of your Terms and Conditions.

Are savings guaranteed?

No. As savings depend on the value of the policy costs, which vary over time, and how much of your business' energy consumption is matched with the Club's generation, we cannot guarantee savings. For example, a sunny, windy or cloudy day, or your business' usage pattern can all affect how much is matched.
