North Lincolnshire Community EnergyIn just two years, North Lincolnshire Community Energy has put solar panels on 21 buildings, from primary schools to a football stadium — generating over 2.7 GWh of clean electricity for the local area.
Project overview
North Lincolnshire Community Energy (NLCE) was formed with the support of a Towns Fund grant awarded to North Lincolnshire Council, with a clear aim: reduce the carbon footprint of schools and community buildings across Scunthorpe, and put the local community at the heart of doing it.
Launched in 2023 and governed by a board of local directors, NLCE works closely with, but independently of, the council, driving the area's ambition to be net zero by 2030.

NLCE has moved fast. Since launching, it has installed solar on 21 sites, including 14 local schools, John Leggott College, North Lincolnshire Museum, Ashby Hub, Normanby Gateway, The Baths Hall, and Attis Arena — home to Scunthorpe United FC. Along the way, it's passed the milestone of one million kilowatt-hours of clean energy generated, enough to power 370 homes for a year, on its way to over 2.7 GWh generated to date.

Bringing the community along for the ride
NLCE hasn't just installed panels and moved on. By hiring a dedicated Community Engagement Coordinator and partnering with Energy4All, it runs solar roadshows, workshops and climate cafés that have reached over 1,000 local schoolchildren, turning every rooftop into a live lesson in renewable energy. Two community share offers, in 2023 and 2024/25, have together raised more than £1 million from local people, who can earn around 5% interest on their investment while funding the next wave of installations.
That combination of fast, ambitious delivery and genuine community engagement saw NLCE shortlisted as a finalist at the Community Energy England Awards 2025, a fantastic achievement for a group that's barely two years old, and a sign of just how much more it's likely to deliver for North Lincolnshire in the years ahead.
